Excerpt from JFK FYI Besides the rebel flag still fluttering in the stiff breeze, the first real indication that they could be in serious trouble happens when the Secret Service agent in charge for that shift, Emory P. Roberts, stands up abruptly in the follow-up car behind the president's Lincoln. He shouts an order to the two jogging agents, who immediately stand down, one of whom gets onto the running board of the follow-up car, but the other agent, Henry J. Rybka, is so shocked by the order that his bewilderment can easily be read by his body language. His hands gesture in animated shrugs three separate times, each conveying more disbelief than the last. Few Americans take their job as seriously as Rybka, so the Secret Service agent simply cannot believe what is happening. Kennedy wonders what is going on, but the trust he has in the Secret Service is unquestioning and complete, and a small amount of conversation with Texas Governor Connally, a fellow former Navy man, distracts him pleasantly while the entire motorcade drives away and leaves Rybka standing there, frustrated, angry, and unable to do the job he takes so seriously. |
